What's your business, and who are your customers?

I launched and grew a subscription box as part of my seven-figure retail business. I then took the expertise I gained as a subscription box owner and turned that into a seven-figure coaching business called Launch Your Box. Inside my coaching membership, I teach product-based business owners and new business owners how to start, launch, and grow a subscription box business.

Tell us about yourself

I started my retail business because I wanted the freedom of working for myself. That business grew from a small side hustle into a highly successful retail business focused on providing an outstanding customer experience. As the subscription box side of my retail business became more and more successful, people reached out to me looking for help starting their own subscription boxes. That's where the idea for the coaching side of my business came from.

In my retail business, I am motivated by my customers. It's choosing items for my online store I know they will love and curating subscription boxes filled with items that surprise and delight them every month. My ideal customer is a busy, southern mom who doesn't take the time to treat herself. Giving her the opportunity to feel special and confident because she knows she looks good motivates me daily.

On the coaching side of my business, it's my students who motivate me. Watching them take an idea or a dream and turn it into a subscription box business that brings recurring revenue into their businesses is so gratifying. They're taking what I'm teaching them and using that knowledge to make a difference in their businesses and their lives. That's what motivates me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have a staff of 16 people. The revenue I generate from my business not only provides for my own family but also provides for those 16 people. I am incredibly proud of that. I also love seeing my coaching students have wins. It is so rewarding when they take what they've learned from me and apply it to their own subscription box business and find success.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being an entrepreneur is hard. There is a lot of uncertainty and so many challenges that come with being a business owner. There are times when sales are down, or there are obstacles or challenges that are outside of your control. As the business owner, it's up to you to solve them. But that's also what's so rewarding about being a business owner. It's knowing that you didn't give up, that you fought through and got scrappy and creative and solved the problem. It's knowing that you succeeded and built a business to be proud of.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build an audience. You can't sell anything without an audience. Audience building may not be the most fun or glamorous part of starting a business, but it is the most important. Find your people, engage with them, and nurture them before you try to sell to them.
  2. Do it messy. Things will never be perfect. If you operate with the idea that it has to be perfect before you do it, you'll never do it. Messy action is better than no action.
  3. Just start. Stop putting it off, stop overthinking it, and stop waiting for the "right time." Work on it as you grow; it will get better as you go. But if you keep putting it off and never get started, you won't have the chance for it to get better.
