Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Denise LaPalm, Founder of L'Beauxtique, located in Glen Ellyn, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At L'Beauxtique, we craft luxury aromatherapy products to support calm, rest, and restoration by using clinical aromatherapy—the use of genuine, authentic, plant-derived essential oils for specific therapeutic purposes—to empower our parasympathetic nervous system and guide us back into balance. Our core clients are modern, ambitious, busy women who are stressed out (but really good at hiding it!)

Tell us about yourself

I'm a mother, wife, career woman, certified professional aromatherapist, and advocate for women balancing emotions through the ups and downs of life. I've climbed the corporate ladder, and like most women, I'm super busy with a growing list of responsibilities. A couple of years ago, I went through some stressors in my life. My silent, connected body began to rebel, and my overwhelming stress led to physical, emotional, and spiritual burnout. I explored ways to relax and de-stress and discovered aromatherapy.

Stress profoundly impacts our physical and mental health — it can make us sick. I learned the hard way that it is not just something we must "deal with" or push through, and I decided to redefine our relationship with stress — so I started L'Beauxtique. We aim to inspire women to carve a luxurious moment for themselves by using our products to create their own beautiful habits and rituals.

My motivation is simple, the importance of mental well-being continues to grow, and stress and anxiety remain an issue for most of the population. We need to be tuned to our bodies and minds and learn to recognize the early signs of stress so we can manage it more healthily and productively. We write weekly blog articles on stress management, mindfulness, nutrition, and more, to help bring a little balance into life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Recognition from @elleusa, @oprahdaily, @byrdie, and others who have shared some kind words. I love hearing from our customers too. It fills my cup learning that women are incorporating and using our products to take time to prioritize their self-care and emotional well-being.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Ironically enough, finding time for self-care! As a business owner, there are a million things to do in the same amount of time as everyone else, resulting in staying up too late or working with little time off. Prioritizing self-care and well-being for entrepreneurs has to become amplified. Otherwise, we sacrifice our fundamental health and happiness.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Plan for three essential things for the day and no more, no matter how tempting.
  2. Stay focused and disciplined, so you save time chasing shiny objects.
  3. Prioritize your self-care; otherwise, you will burn out. Fast.
