Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason Weitz, Owner of Left Mind Media, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We created Left Mind Media to get your mission and message in front of the right people at the right time and for the right reasons. Left Mind Media is a full-service video production and video marketing company as well as website conversion specialists. We service the business community at large and take a special interest in coaches, consultants, and custom home builders.

Tell us about yourself

I've been selling videos since 2001. My elementary school would put on talent shows, and I – a high school freshman – would film them and sell copies to the parents. I've always had the entrepreneurial bug and loved the video, so this business seemed like a great fit. After starting the company, it became apparent that I needed to offer my clients a lot more services. I think that's what keeps me motivated and going throughout the day - wanting to grow and learn to better serve my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the editor who left me. That's a long story, but suffice to say I take great pride In helping people, whether that be clients or employees. I have seen this particular person grow both professionally and as a person. We're still close friends to this day. In fact, we are writing a short film together right now. I make a concerted effort to treat people well and not micromanage them. So I guess you would say my biggest accomplishment is not being my old bosses.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The ups and downs of being a business owner are crazy. You can be on top of the world one day, and the next, be ready to quit. You're always questioning yourself, second-guessing yourself, and just not knowing what to do from moment to moment. That's why I recommend that every business owner find someone to network with, be that a BNI group, a Chamber of Commerce, or even an elite group of business people. Everyone needs someone to bounce ideas off of and to assure them that everything is going to be OK.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take action.
  2. I meant now.
  3. What are you waiting for?

It's a little cliché, and you'll hear it a lot in the business and motivational world. But it's true that being done is better than being perfect. Done now is better than perfect a year from now. I can't tell you the amount of times I've been thinking about doing something, pondering it, worrying about all the things that could go wrong, and before I know it, the day is over, and I've done nothing. I promise you'll figure out the problems and how to solve them as they come to you. Everything will work out, and if it doesn't, at least you'll have given it your best shot, and you'll have one less regret.
