What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an email marketing strategist and conversion copywriter and the owner of Lindsay Hope Creative. I help purpose-driven businesses connect with their customers and discover hidden revenue in their email lists.

Tell us about yourself

The path into marketing was windy for me. I studied sociology and worked in non-profits, craft beer, and music before starting my business. All the skills I gained in those areas prepared me for starting a business, and working for myself was a lifelong dream. My greatest motivation as an entrepreneur is freedom. Freedom in time, who I work with, and what I do. I'm inspired by the purpose-driven brands I work with, and collaborating with great people doing important work lights me up!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly? Everything about starting and running a business deserves to be celebrated! My biggest accomplishment has been tackling the mindset demons that can get in the way of making progress. Building a personal brand is a test of vulnerability and perseverance. There are ups and downs, highs and lows. Sticking with it and finding success through the years of Covid, an economy facing recession, an influx of freelancers entering the market chasing the dream of the gig economy, and lightning-speed-quick developments of AI tools makes me proud.

Over the past four years, I've niched from content to copywriting to a narrower focus on email marketing. Refining my area of expertise has been an enormous accomplishment. It's allowed me to offer deeper value to my clients and positioned me as a master in my email strategy and copy skills.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding time to completely unplug from my business can be challenging. When I was working a job and had PTO, it was widely accepted to disconnect from work altogether. But now, even when I'm traveling (which is my favorite hobby) and essentially "off work," my to-do list lingers in the back of my mind.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Work with a coach and/or join a community that supports and pushes you. Starting, running, and growing a business alone is hard — and unnecessary. Support from a coach — and/or a community — is essential to your success. You need someone to bounce ideas off of and someone to ask questions. A coach can act as a mirror to help you see strengths you might otherwise overlook and to help you navigate challenges.
  2. Outsource your weaker skills, and build on your strong skills. Not great with numbers? Hire a bookkeeper. Need help with admin tasks? Hire a VA. Outsourcing — sometimes before you feel ready — helps you focus on your greatest strengths rather than wasting time on your weaknesses.
  3. There will be hard days — don't give up. Resilience and perseverance must prevail, and the business owners that succeed push through the hard times — no matter what.
