Mobile Physical Therapy - Live Life Physiotherapy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karl Burris, Owner of Live Life Physiotherapy, located in Santee, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a hybrid mobile and gym-based physical therapy clinic. Our therapists are board-certified orthopedics specialists and share a passion for treating neurology clients, including balance and fall risk in the older population.

Tell us about yourself

My grandfather suffered from disabilities related to diabetes which resulted in his older life experience being limited to sitting in his recliner for the majority of the day. It was like he was doomed from the moment of his diagnosis. The healthcare system treated him like a passive participant in the treatment plan. He was up to 25 medications per day that had to be organized with an Excel spreadsheet. Towards the end of his life, a caregiver started doing some very low-level exercises, and he "magically" got 10 years younger in terms of his strength and energy. His quality of life was significantly impacted by this experience. I was grateful for this person going above and beyond her job duties, but also extremely frustrated that it took someone that was not even educated in medicine, exercise, or behaviors to make such a huge difference in my grandfather's well-being. I wanted to grow into a profession that could generate lifestyle changes that empowered people to take ownership of their health and medical conditions to maximize their quality of life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My accomplishments come every day in the impact I see when my client's become stronger, more confident with their walking, and taking ownership of their health.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Human beings are complex. We tend to think we can offer a one size fits all approach that we see advertised. We try to create unique programs based on our client's needs that will empower behavior changes. Concentrating on this while navigating different payers and covered services can be challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have to have a passion for the people you serve. Be authentic and provide a good product/service; the rest will fall into place.
  2. Learn the dynamics of business from what business entity you will be and set up tax preparation, so you aren't surprised at the end of the year.
  3. Slow growth is okay if you need to find the right fit instead of hiring anyone to fill the demand. The quality of your product/service will suffer, which will hurt your brand image.
