Creating Firm Foundations For Small Businesses - Liz Illg

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Illg, CEO of Legendary Ideas Group, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Legendary Ideas Group. I founded the digital agency after I became a serial entrepreneur in the brick-and-mortar space. I had grown my grooming shop in Phoenix, Puff & Fluff, to several locations quickly, and other business owners turned to me for advice and consulting. After consulting entrepreneurs, I grew a small (yet mighty) team of technology and copywriting professionals. Now, we serve small businesses with done-for-you websites and training manuals. External and internal information is what keeps businesses moving forward, and I love that we're able to provide both to our valued clients.

Tell us about yourself

The theme of my entrepreneurial journey is: meeting my clients wherever they're at. After I'd been successful in starting a service-based business in the B&M space, I helped other businesses plan for success. When my clients needed my advice to grow their companies, I began consulting them one-on-one. My clients needed help with marketing and training their staff to focus their attention on bigger-picture goals, and I created a small agency to support them. Whenever I've had success tips to share or valuable resources, I've made it my mission to help other entrepreneurs achieve more.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is mastering the art of delegation. It truly takes a team to any business grow and scale. Oftentimes, business owners get in their own way because they think they have to manage every aspect of their company. In order to grow, business owners need to learn how to share the work with their team, trust them to make it happen, and celebrate victory together. I wouldn't be a success without my people, and I'm very honored to have such a talented team in all of my businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The struggle that I see most often in businesses is that the owner doesn't want to let go of controlling everything. There's power in delegating. My advice would be to document your daily processes, delegate them to a trusted team member, and focus your attention on the work that will make your business bigger. Your team wants to help you; you just need to let go of controlling every little detail. If your goal is to develop leaders in your organization, give your people responsibilities, let them manage their work, fail, make solutions, and trust the process.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

To start your business: take big risks and bet on yourself.

To run your business: create repeatable processes and document everything so that you can train your people effectively.

To grow your business: prioritize being a CEO. Get out of the daily operation of your business and protect your schedule. You need to be out of the day-to-day and be fully focused on big-picture planning.
