Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lohani Noor, Psychotherapist, Presenter & Author, located in Manchester, England, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a psychotherapist with a specialism in Psychosexual therapies. I work in private practice, and my client base is broad in its demography. I also offer personal development and life/work coaching. If our thinking or feelings are muddied, so too will be the way in which we live our lives. A psychotherapeutic approach to life coaching, digging deeper into outdated feelings and thinking, produces deeper behavioral outcomes which are sustained.

Tell us about yourself

I absolutely love facilitating positive change in others. Doing so also enhances my own existence, my understanding of myself as a human, and all my interpersonal relationships. Becoming a psychotherapist, for me, was a life choice. I remember reading the book The Secret, and I just couldn't connect with it. Then I read another book called The Deeper Secret, where the author Ann Marie Postman asks the reader to change their perspective and instead of asking 'what can the universe give me' ask 'What can I give to the universe' in other words, HOW CAN I BE OF SERVICE. I believe that through my psychotherapeutic work, I am in service to the universe.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far must be my role as a therapist presenter on BBC1's Sex On The Couch, a program about couples therapy. A close second would be the production of my book '12 steps to sexual connection' available on audible.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a self-employed psychotherapist is amazing in so many ways, but equally, for me, I find it can be a lonely place. As a psychotherapist, much of my work is hidden, it is a private event, and for ethical reasons, there is zero potentiality of converting therapy clients into friends. This is possibly one of the reasons that I find life coaching an appealing addition to my practice; it offers me a new and welcomed level of sociability.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't worry about time; time will pass no matter what you do (or don't do).
  2. Have a plan and contract with yourself; if you don't, you may well wander aimlessly as opposed to effectively directing your energies.
  3. Build a community, support others, and let yourself be supported as well. Heed the African Proverb, 'if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.'
