Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Schletzbaum & Jerry Bergstrom, Founders of Lonely Pines Farm, located in Quilcene, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lonely Pines Farm is a small-scale farm on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington - focused on growing fresh flowers & gourmet garlic. But that's not all! We're also passionate about sharing gardening & homesteading content with our followers. So whether you're interested in delicious garlic for your kitchen, learning how to grow something in the garden, or working to become a little more self-sufficient - we've got you covered!

Tell us about yourself

A dream that started as a small suburban garden has now blossomed into a full-fledged country farm. And that dream has always focused on us spending as much time as we can together, enjoying life. It began with sharing gardening content & tutorials through social media, then we acquired a few farm animals, got a little acreage, and now we're selling flowers & garlic at the local farmers market. Our community has been so incredibly supportive along this journey & we're thankful for each and every one. Some days it really feels like a dream.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having our flowers featured in someone's wedding for the first time. A local small business owner reached out to us for a few DIY flower buckets to make their own wedding table arrangements. It was such a joy to go out in the garden & select the very best flowers we had to be a part of their big day. Later seeing the photos on social media just warmed our hearts.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a farmer, it seems like the biggest challenge is always making enough money. You need your hands in a lot of different pies & some are more lucrative than others. The trick is trying a bunch of different options until you figure out your specific combo of income sources. Ask any farmer about their "money-makers," and the lists will vary wildly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Dream big. You only get one life - make it what you want.
  2. Always keep your eyes on the end goal. Don't get derailed & keep working towards it.
  3. Never compare where you're at in your journey to where someone else is at in your journey.
