Filipino & Asian Inspired Candles - LUHO Candle Co

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaylyn Prasad, Co-Owner of LUHO Candle Co., located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family business inspired by our Filipino heritage and love of Asian culture. We have created a line of non-toxic and eco-friendly luxury candles that are a cleaner alternative to regular candles, produced in small batches with high-quality materials like coconut-apricot wax and FSC-certified natural wooden wicks. We believe everyone deserves a little “luho” (luxury) in their life!

Tell us about yourself

This business was intended to be a side project for us. I am a high school teacher, and my sister (Jaysicca) and cousin (Kenneth) are still studying in post-secondary. But what got us started was just trying something new, honestly, and who doesn’t love candles? What motivates us each day to do this is hearing and seeing how our candles light up the lives of our customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far as a business owner is hearing all the positive feedback from our customers.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Personally, one of the hardest things that comes to being a business owner is being consistent with social media posts and email campaigns! I believe in quality content rather than a huge quantity, but to make quality, it does take time and long-term planning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research about the industry you’re looking to enter. Find out as much as you can before you start anything.
  2. Reach out and connect to individuals and businesses who have experience in the industry. An easy way to do this is as simple as joining a Facebook group!
  3. Make sure you have the means or the funds to start - it isn’t easy in the beginning, so it’s good to have some money set aside that is only for your business.
