Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Palak Shah, Co-Founder of Luna Physical Therapy, located in Menlo Park, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Luna is the fastest-growing PT clinic nationally, providing in-home outpatient physical therapy to patients since 2018. Luna supports patients in 48 metro markets and 25 states. Luna’s mission is to reimagine the outpatient physical therapy experiences for patients, therapists, physicians, and health systems. Luna has now supported hundreds of thousands of visits and has 3000+ therapists. Luna is proud to partner with over 50 health systems & orthopedic groups, including Emory Health, Intermountain Healthcare, and UCLA Health.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Luna co-founder and head of Clinical Services. Being a clinician for 15+ years, it was evident that the traditional brick-and-mortar physical therapy model is highly fragmented and has several gaps and technology limitations. For example, the national average to seek care is 21 days, which is unacceptable. My time at Stanford prior to Luna helped me establish a high standard of evidence-based practice and patient experience. I strongly believe in the power of in-person healthcare care, especially in the field of rehabilitation. Having the opportunity to work with a passionate co-founding team that has a strong vision and mission to improve the lives of patients and also providers is a big driver for me each day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Demonstrating 6,134% growth during the four years of Luna is a huge accomplishment. We know patients love Luna. It is wonderful to hear patients saying, “Luna is a miracle standing at the doorstep!”

Luna also recently received the “Exceptional Performance” award from Medicare for its performance on MIPS, a merit-based incentive program. Luna is committed to delivering exceptional care as we scale nationally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Healthcare is complex. Being a business owner in the healthcare space and changing traditional healthcare practices is even more complex.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure that you understand the sector. Identifying your USP, gaps in the market, and how you can bring added customer value will help the business to grow at scale.
  2. Be passionate! Starting and running a business can be incredibly time-consuming. Make sure that you’re passionate about what you’re doing!
  3. Be resilient! Running a business comes with a lot of unknowns, so it’s important to ensure that you are not only patient but have the capacity to bounce back, learn and grow.
