Bluff City Speech Language Pathology - Lydia Perkins

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lydia Perkins, Co-Owner of Bluff City Speech Language Pathology LLC, located in Collierville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a private practice that provides speech-language pathology services: evaluation and treatment of a variety of communication, cognitive, and swallowing/feeding disorders. We provide services across the lifespan.

Tell us about yourself

Bluff City Speech is owned by my colleague & friend, Sydnee McCoy, and myself, Lydia Perkins. We are both speech pathologists who have worked in the acute medical field for a long time and decided it was time to branch out by offering services to a wider variety of age groups and being able to individualize our plan of care as we would like.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Working for ourselves provides us freedom of being able to offer patients what they really need, rather than being forced to work within corporate limitations on clinical practice. It feels great to be able to help people reach their goals without anything holding you back!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing so far has been dealing with health insurance credentialing processes, but we want to be able to offer our patients access to use their insurance here.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Life is short, do what you're passionate about. If you can't find that working for someone else, you can create it yourself by starting your own business.
  2. Make the time. Many of us don't realize how much time we spend on social media, tv, etc. Even if you only have a very small amount of time to work towards your business goals per day, do it. Over time, you'll be surprised at what you can accomplish in even 30 minutes a day.
  3. Take the time to learn all aspects of your business, even if you plan on eventually hiring help. You never want to be in a position of being helpless & reliant on others for your own business to survive.
