Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Omar Akhter, Founder of Madina Medicine, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a medical practice that is focused on a holistic approach to treating chronic disease and chronic symptoms. Most of the patients I see are those that are frustrated with the current medical system in which they are not heard, their complaints ignored, and not being treated in a holistic way where all of their symptoms can be put together to determine the root cause of their illness. I am trying to fix medicine one patient at a time.

Tell us about yourself

I was trained in the conventional medical system but soon after working in a large hospital system became pretty disappointed by the lack of time I got to spend with my patients and the strong approach toward using pharmaceuticals or procedures to treat patients as opposed to trying diet, lifestyle, and other treatment options which are safer and more natural. What motivates me every day is the number of people out there struggling with chronic diseases who could benefit so much from this type of holistic approach.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say just starting the business and going about the day-to-day is a big enough accomplishment and not easy for anyone to do. Beyond that, I think seeing my dream of treating patients in this way is extremely satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing is that you have to wear multiple hats, especially at the beginning, and really take care of all aspects of the business, which really doesn’t apply to other regular jobs. A business owner has to do everything at the same time. I even assembled my desk with my own hands, and I’m extremely proud of it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would say for anyone thinking about starting your business, realize that the start is very difficult, but it gets better as long as you’re willing to put in the work. Also, to realize that, unlike a regular job, it’s not easy to switch off from your business. Some top tips would be to go for it and don’t hold back, be smart in your marketing strategy, and know exactly what you want to accomplish.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I want to get it out to as many people as possible that there is a better way of treating a chronic disease or holistically that so many people can benefit from.
