Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Meranda, Owner of Magpie Mouse Studios, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an enamel jewelry business based out of Seattle, Washington. We make one-of-a-kind glass jewelry for people who like to be noticed for their individuality. We love our collectors!

Tell us about yourself

I knew at a very young age that I was going to be an artist. I actually thought I would be a painter or printmaker, but metalsmithing became my true love, and with that, all aspects of jewelry making. I started with beads, as most jewelers do, but I kept taking classes and learning more skills. I create art and beauty every day. I am lucky enough to live in the Pacific Northwest, one of the most beautiful places in the world. It's impossible not to be inspired by nature living up here.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment to date is opening a studio at Pike Place market! We are so excited to be located in the heart of downtown Seattle.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, the most important thing is to stay nimble. If the last few years taught us anything, it's to pivot when we need to. Pre-pandemic, we were primarily doing popups and art markets. We switched very fast to online, which saved our business in 2020. Now it seems people need to feel normalcy and are embracing brick-and-mortar, so we went that route while maintaining our online store.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a bookkeeper right away. Even if you can do it or think you aren't selling enough to quantify it, do it. My only regret is not doing it sooner.
  2. Get a business bestie or two!! You'll need someone to talk to about things. Regular friends are great for decompressing, but you need someone who understands what you are going through.
  3. Look at your accounts every day, even when they are scary. Ignoring problems won't make them go away.
