Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristine Sperling, Founder of Makes 3 Organics, located in Camarillo, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We create organic skin care products and curate the most trusted natural brands for products that every family member can use. We especially connect with customers who are looking for non-toxic, clean products that are environmentally conscious and with consumers looking for independent brands to support.

Along the way, we started manufacturing clean products for other small businesses to help them achieve their dreams of making a difference and offering consumers natural alternatives to petroleum-based personal and skincare products for themselves, their households, and their pets.

Tell us about yourself

My husband and I left our traditional professional services jobs to launch this company because we believe in offering organic and natural products to consumers and helping them reduce the toxins they put on their skin and clean their homes.

After our daughter developed asthma, allergies, and eczema, her pediatric allergist told us to detox our household. We did, with excellent results for her health. We started making the products we couldn't find on store shelves (even at health food stores) and then started sharing them with family and friends. The business grew from there.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating something from nothing, surviving the types of financial stress tests that so many businesses have not survived, including the pandemic, staying true to our mission, and growing personally and professionally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most challenging thing for a consumer packaged goods company is scaling the business. CPG takes significant capital investments, and that is the biggest challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait.
  2. You will learn as you go.
  3. Do not make a plan B. Your ultimate success depends on your commitment. So be ready to make it.
