Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Margot Daley, Owner of Margot Daley Photography, located in Toronto, ON, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Toronto-based Personal Branding Photographer specializing in helping women entrepreneurs level up their businesses with dynamic, bold photos showcasing the woman behind the brand.

How they do, what they do, and who they are when they're off the clock. Branding Photos help my clients level up their visual presence, boost sales, increase engagement on social media, and boost their confidence.

Tell us about yourself

I've been a Television Producer and Director for 25 years before I ever picked up a real, big-girl camera. I picked the camera up to master video, not Photography. But once I did, I was hooked on the power of a single image! It's so much more powerful than a video to me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Putting myself out there in a new role when I was known and established for something else. I was willing to learn with the other newbies, though I had mastered something else. It's humbling to expose your new thing to your colleagues and say, this is the new direction I'm moving in.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I'm still in that transition phase of going from a full-time job with a Photography side-hustle to going Part-time with the main job to do Photography part-time as well.

The transition is hard when you are juggling two big things. I'm there now! But it reinforces that I really want one role Full-time over the other.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Enroll in Google & Youtube University and devour everything out there. It should become your nightly viewing as experts are sharing everything online. Invest in other paid training too, but there is a lot of free content out there about what you want to do.
  2. Tell people what you are doing. The biggest hurdle is often admitting out loud to people what you are doing at the beginning: Saying, I'm starting a Photography Biz, I have a Bakery Business, I'm now Coaching. Practice saying to everyone: strangers, kids, colleagues! Let people know what you are doing.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you wait until you have it all together, you won't start! Make a date on the calendar to launch and stick to it. You'll refine as you go.
