Capturing Moments - Mariah Coulombe Photography

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mariah Coulombe, a published photographer based in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a photography business, and my services include a variety of genres, including covering weddings & elopements, branding, portraits, and pretty much anything that requires capturing memories/moments that are raw and authentic or pursuing assisting others in capturing their creative vision for whatever project we tackle together.

Tell us about yourself

I have always shown an interest in photography since I was quite young, but all the free time we had during the global pandemic gave me the flexibility to sit down and do some learning and the building of my business. The amazing people that I get to meet and work with and their constant support continue to feed that motivation flame and keep me coming back for more!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have had so many fantastic opportunities so far in my photography career, but an accomplishment that weighs in for me is last year (2022); I had my work published in 29 different magazines around the world, including two cover features.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think one of the toughest things that comes with being a business owner is dealing with any doubt in yourself. It's important to remind yourself that there are times of the year that may not be as busy as others, and it's important to just keep showing up every day regardless and giving that 104% effort.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you have a business aspiration or something that inspires you - just take the leap and pursue it. It really is a true statement that when you do what you love, it doesn't feel like work. I hit the ground running with my photography career and never looked back.
  2. Networking is important. Making an effort to interact with others and support them where possible is key to growing that sense of "community" with your business and opening up as many opportunities as possible for yourself. It costs $0 to share, like, or comment on posts from other businesses, but you betcha it is rewarding to help others!
  3. Stay versatile and capable of adapting to change. Our world is progressing so quickly with technology and resources, no matter what business you are pursuing, and it's important to keep up with it. This can include:

    • Stay educated (read articles, watch Youtube videos, Google is your friend)
    • Find other businesses relevant to yours and see what they're doing (or what might be trending)
    • Keep an open mind and always listen to knowledge others might share with you
