Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marisa Faye, Founder of Marisa Faye Wellness, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help women decode their hormone issues (think: irregular periods, acne, poor digestion, poor sleep, low mood, slow metabolism), heal the root cause of what's really messing with their health and wellbeing, and get into the best health of their life. I'm a functional nutritionist who uses holistic wellness practices and principles, such as diet, lifestyle, mindset, and movement.

Tell us about yourself

I bounced around from doctor to specialist to an alternative health practitioner for years, trying to figure out why I had low energy, low mood, and sluggish digestion - but no one was able to give me answers. They wrote off my symptoms as mostly normal and offered prescription medications to solve the problem. In my heart of hearts, I knew that this was not the way I would heal, so I started learning more about holistic practices and nourishing foods. When I went through a divorce at 30 years old, I decided it was time to redefine my life. I saw it as an opportunity to live the life I always wanted to live, which meant really following my purpose. That's when I went back to school, started teaching yoga, and opened up my wellness business to help other women not get lost in the symptom management spiral of western medicine.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I transitioned to working full-time for myself, I felt like I made it! People underestimate how challenging it can be to do everything for your business - I'm the CEO, CFO, CCO, Head of Marketing, Head of Education & Learning, and the person who supports all my clients. That's a lot of hats to wear. I'm constantly learning and growing my skill set, but my clients continually remind me that it's all worth it as they start to feel better and share more with people about how to live a healthier life.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are a lot of long nights and isolation when you're building your own business. It's so important to have supportive relationships and mentors so that it doesn't get overwhelming. And to know when to rest. There's a balance between hustling and allowing that all of us need to keep in mind.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose something that you actually enjoy. Starting a business in a field that doesn't interest you will burn you out quickly.
  2. Find ways to make something each day fun. We underestimate as adults how important fun is in keeping us engaged and motivated.
  3. Take care of yourself, for real, to mean this means having skilled holistic health professionals that I regularly see to help me be my healthiest self. If you aren't healthy, you can't create a sustainable and thriving business in the long run.
