Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Gordon, Founder of Mark Gordon Enterprises, located in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business and passion is to empower your relationships at work and home. I firmly believe that everything flows out of the relationship, starting with yourself and then flowing to others. I provide workshops, online masterclasses, and coaching around subjects of building healthy relationships based on my groundbreaking book called Relationship Matters. A healthy relational culture can create an atmosphere where people flourish. My clients are families, organizations, and businesses that desire their family or organization to flourish.

Tell us about yourself

I have been married 39 years to my amazing wife and have three married children and two grandchildren that I adore! I was in a different industry for years until an addiction caught up with me and almost destroyed our family. It was in my healing journey that I discovered that there were a lot of people who needed healing like I did. As I continued in my healing, I began to help others, and for the past 32 years, I have served others on their healing journey in one form or another. I love what I do and am very grateful every day for the honour of empowering others!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, it is the investment I get to make in people's lives every day. The return on investment is not always monetary, but I would not have it any other way. Writing a book was a great success for me, and creating great content to empower people. I have a podcast, am a guest on multiple others, and always enjoy doing them.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Working in the business often keeps me from working on the business. Consistency on Social media is a challenge for me as well. I also find it hard always to be bootstrapping, but I know it's necessary. I think it is time for me to scale, and I am starting to surround myself with the people who can help do that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are passionate about it and that the business fulfills your purpose in life. Just making money won't be enough to keep going when it is tough.
  2. Believe in what you are offering fully, and know what differentiates you from others. Also, make sure you are truly fulfilling a heart-felt need in the marketplace.
  3. Surround yourself with your weaknesses; in other words, contract out what you are not good at so that your time is spent on what you are best at!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Take the time to build healthy relationships with team members, suppliers, and clients. It is hard work but work that will pay off in the long run. Don't let the tyranny of the urgent distract you from the intentional investment of the important.
