What's your business, and who are your customers?

I import Ayurvedic herbs from India and sell them through Shopify and Amazon. My business is called Kailash Herbals.

Tell us about yourself

I came across an herb called Haritaki while in India. I discovered that they had amazing effects on the body; in fact, in India, they are called the king of herbs, which is a pretty bold statement. So I decided to import them to set up the business. As I introduced them to friends, the results that my friends reported inspired me to share more, so I made some Youtube videos, and these videos really took off. This gave me even more confidence that the products have a lot of value. So now that I have over 50,000 customers, I really get joy out of chatting and helping the customers and seeing their reviews, and hearing their stories.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Learning all the various marketing techniques and then seeing some of them work and others just being big flops! Each of the marketing strategies required me to learn new skills or find skilled people to help me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Managing all the different aspects of the business and keeping the important and high-value activities as the focus. It is so easy to go down rabbit holes in so many areas, from marketing to shipping to financials, and miss out on keeping the basics functioning and the expansion happening.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Take the time to develop a business plan. Keep your task lists organized and your top priorities for the week at hand, and check them daily. Make sure your enthusiasm for the business is high, and make sure you are doing activities that keep it high. Otherwise, you will not last long.
