Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Schorath (née Copeland), Owner of Massage Mood, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Registered Massage Therapist, and most of my clients live in the southwest of Calgary. I work with all ages and abilities and believe every single person can benefit from incorporating massage therapy into their wellness routine.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for building community, helping people, and living an active life led me to begin a fulfilling career in massage therapy. I love what I do because every single day, I see how massage helps alleviate pain, improve posture and increase an overall sense of well-being. Massage therapy treats both physical and emotional stress, and I strive to bring balance, awareness, and knowledge to each of my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I started my business working out of a chiropractic clinic, and once I had built up my client base, I took a big step and moved my practice into my home. I couldn’t be happier I made the transition.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It can be hard to enforce boundaries, especially when people cancel appointments with little notice and don’t want to pay the fee. It’s important that clients respect my time, but I also don’t like people being upset with me. This is the biggest challenge for me personally.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are passionate about your work. Don’t let money alone motivate you to go solo.
  2. Don’t skip the business plan. It may not seem like a lot of fun, but you need to go in prepared.
  3. Consistency is key. It may be a slow start, but just keep going, and your business will grow.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am trained in myofascial cupping, orthopaedic assessment, and lymphatic drainage, as well as TMJ, prenatal, deep tissue, and Swedish massage. I specialize in jaw work and whiplash-related injuries.
