Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Alfs, Founder of Midwest School of Herbal Studies, located in New Brighton, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At the Midwest School of Herbal Studies, students receive so much more than an ordinary education. Our students come from all walks of life, are generally female, 25-55 years old, and are passionate about improving their own health and the health of others. They also tend to be nature lovers.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always been passionately in love with nature and desirous of helping others improve themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. Every morning I awaken, I can hardly wait to start the day, as I love what I do very much!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing my student body to approximately 1,000 dedicated students
graduating many of our students and seeing the improvement in our student's lives and families.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing cash flow, dealing with all of the paperwork required by the government, and growing in a depressed economy hampered by government/media scaremongering and restrictions relative to COVID-19

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t start without a cash reserve to live on for at least 2-3 years (the time required for most businesses to start making a profit).
  2. Realize that hiring employees will open up a plethora of responsibilities, expenses, and stress, and be prepared for that if you decide to go through with it.
  3. Consider offering discounts, sales, etc., as people like a deal.
