What's your business, and who are your customers?
The real estate industry needs experienced copywriters that connect with their targeted audience. I supply the copy they need to achieve their marketing goals, whether it's regular blog posts, social media content, or articles.
Tell us about yourself
When I decided to take a sabbatical from teaching, I needed a way to make ends meet. People in my circle knew I enjoyed writing and so they offered me some work to help out. I joined some online job marketplaces, too, seeking to apply to writing skills. It grew rather fast from there, and I never saw a reason to go back to teaching. Freelancing offered me flexibility, which became key as we moved around and grew our family.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
For me personally, the first year, I made more on freelancing part-time than I did busting my butt as a middle school teacher. The work-life balance and ability to contribute to the household have been great.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Getting over imposter syndrome. There are days where the writing comes easy, and so does the confidence that my copy stands up to the client's expectations. On other days, I feel like I'm the worst writer and mediocre at best. It's not always easy to believe in yourself and your skills. As a freelance writer, the other hard part is networking and building relationships with other writers.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Like copy, the hardest part is always getting started. Building momentum takes time; you'll never build momentum if you don't take the first step. Keep finding ways to learn about your industry so your skills stay sharp and current.
