Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Campbell Bailey, General Manager of Meander River Farm & Brewery, located in Ashdale, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an on-farm brewery and cidery in rural Hants County, NS, with a winery-like farm-to-glass destination experience. Our customers are all different, including millennials, couples, families, and retirees, near and far.

Tell us about yourself

We started this business after being involved in the craft beer industry through hops. A few years into production, we began to produce cider in the chill of a dreadful winter. Our customers and visitors are our motivation. Having more people experience the farm and share an hour or a day with us in what we feel is paradise is our goal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our national Canadian Brewing Award for our Smoky Chipotle Porter. A huge recognition for a brewery of our size.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The work-life balance. Work becomes life, life becomes work, and creating those boundaries can be hard - especially when working closely with family members, but in the liquor industry, it is nice to be able to "break bread" so to speak (cheers!) at the end of a long day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

No such thing as 9-5! Find enjoyment every year in what you do, whether that's expanding on a new idea starting a new project, or refining a product. There will be slow days and busy days. Don't base your business's entire existence on one bad review or slow day. Use that to improve and move forward.
