Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Greg Pellatt, Principal Partner at Medicore, located in Huntington Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a medical device distributorship that specializes in devices for the spine. We contract with OEMs that design and create the most innovative product to help patients with nerve and back pain. Our sales representatives educate the surgeons on the benefits of the product, attend the surgery to give advice on how to best use the product, and work with the hospital to ensure the product is clean and sterile for the surgery.

Tell us about yourself

I am an engineer from Rensselaer. I started my career at Boeing. After attending the University of Southern California, I realized I wanted to be in sales. I ended up in pharmaceutical and eventually found my way to spine devices. After 10 years with a start-up company that went IPO, my current business partner and I decided to start our own distributorship.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment we have had as business owners is employing 10-15 people and growing revenue every year we have been in business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is also one of the parts I enjoy most about being the owner; I get to wear so many different hats. One day I'm a sales guy, the next day, the CFO. I like the variability, but it is difficult being good at all the different disciplines, giving up control of some of the tasks as we grow, and just managing it all daily, monthly, and yearly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have faith that you are good at what you do, and the business will grow.
  2. Don't panic when revenue is not what you want it to be. Just figure out what you can do to change the trajectory and do it.
  3. Don't spend all day planning. If you have a gut feeling, go for it.
