Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meghan Womack, Founder of MMW Communications, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a strategic communications consultant and advisor focusing on messaging, reputation building, media coverage, and brand awareness. I also serve in shorter-term fractional lead communications roles, as needed. I work with global clients in technology, financial services, politics, media, and non-profits interested in reaching their target audiences effectively through a mixture of digital and traditional communication strategies.

Tell us about yourself

After working in-house for major global media, financial, and non-profit brands for more than 15 years, I decided to depart and start my firm to meet the needs of my clients with more targeted budgets and flexible time frames. I'm motivated to provide sound counsel and recommendations daily to firms I believe in and want to succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been expanding my subject work areas to new industries, such as healthcare and commercial real estate, and the ability to speak at different local forums, including local business and non-profit panels, to provide advice and insights for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Running my firm allows me to be selective with the companies I work with and support.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner presents some unique challenges in that you're responsible for everything from financial compliance to promotion and client-building to satisfying the obligations and expectations of your contracts. After trying to do it all, I quickly realized that some of the tasks were skills that needed to be outsourced and streamlined so that I could focus on client needs and deliverables.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Running a business can get overwhelming if you try to do everything yourself. Seek out the expertise of specialists to do things that you might not be good at or that take up a disproportionate amount of your time.
  2. Depending on your industry, running a business can be lonely. Most of my work is research and writing remotely, so there are many times when I'm working without regular daily interactions. Find a local community of business owners or freelancers with who you can collaborate and share ideas. A local community and trusted network of collaborators is also a great way to expand your business and create a circle of referrals for future business.
  3. Don't stretch yourself too thin when marketing your business. There is rarely a reason for a company to be on every social media channel or marketing platform. Develop an editorial plan for each forum and tackle promotion within reason and by testing to see what best reaches and resonates with your target audience.
