Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Fernandez, founder of The Atlanta Postpartum Doula, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a postpartum doula, business mentor, and energy practitioner, and I serve birth workers, expecting families, and postpartum women.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business after the birth of my first child. I had a long 60-hour labor that ended in a c-section. Luckily, my sister was in town with her five-week-old and spent those first days home with me, holding space for me, teaching me how to be a mom, and sharing her knowledge. It was a transformative experience, and I knew every mother's birthright was to experience this type of deep nourishment after birth. So I opened the doors to The Atlanta Postpartum Doula and never looked back. Alongside creating my business, I learned my process was extremely useful for other doulas to model. In sharing my tools, resources, and business skills, I support doulas as they run their businesses.

I'm motivated every day to continue the work in my business because it is my mission to radically revolutionize postpartum in America. We are extremely overdue for reforming this sacred time. Not only postpartum but motherhood, parenting, and healing. This keeps me going every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the quick turnaround I had in learning and implementing all the pieces it takes to run a business. I did it in under one year!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Trusting what your body is telling you is the correct next step, not what your mind is telling you that you 'should' do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a mentor who is doing what you want to do.
  2. Invest in classes or courses to learn.
  3. Trust yourself and always always always continue your important work.
