Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason Hunt, Co-Founder of Merged Media, located in Guelph, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Merged Media is a digital marketing agency serving small to medium-sized businesses locally and globally. We cover an array of industries, from service-based businesses like landscapers and dentists to eCommerce businesses selling items like jigsaw puzzles and dog coats.

Tell us about yourself

I initially got my hands dirty in digital marketing while promoting my rock band in Japan back in 2007. At the time, we used MySpace to grow our following and amass a tour of Japan. Not too shabby for a mediocre rock band. This experience evolved into using my marketing expertise and creativity to promote other people's businesses. Knowing my purpose and my strength motivates me to help others focus on their one thing and allow others to do the rest, and my one thing is marketing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, I've been able to be the face of my brand and travel the world. I get to promote my business to entrepreneurs and marketing professionals around the globe and run a successful marketing podcast. In May 2022, I was a speaker at Ad World, one of the world's biggest advertising conferences, and I just recently launched my debut book titled 'Drop The Mic Marketing: How To Find Your Social Media Voice,' which can be found on Amazon.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with a lot of challenges. One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is the responsibility of managing finances. Business owners must take into account all of the costs associated with running a business, such as taxes, payroll, rent, and other overhead expenses. They must also budget for future investments, such as new equipment for employees or marketing campaigns. This can be a daunting task, as it requires careful planning and a thorough understanding of financial principles.

Additionally, business owners must be prepared to handle any unexpected costs that may arise, such as repairs or legal fees. Managing finances is a critical part of running a successful business, and it can be daunting for business owners who are new to the world of finance. Thankfully, I partnered with someone who is amazing at handling the finance side of the business so that I can focus on what I do best, which is being the face of the business, running a podcast, and building relationships.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a solid business plan: A well-thought-out business plan is essential in ensuring that your business is successful. It should include a description of your product or service, the target market, financial projections, and a marketing strategy.
  2. Utilize technology: Technology can be a great asset when it comes to running and growing a business. Utilize tools such as social media, content marketing, and analytics to help build your brand and grow your customer base.
