Killin' It With Content - Metrospective Media

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sean O'Grady, CEO of Metrospective Media, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Seannie Cameras of Metrospective Media specializes in delivering high-end, one-of-a-kind, signature photography and videography services to meet a wide range of industries. From working with artists and musicians to craft their music videos or document their live performances to creating branded content assets for major brands and outlets to exploring corporate media solutions. Not limiting themselves to just the photo and video arts, Seannie Cameras is an accomplished, award-winning producer and director with hundreds of local, regional, and national advertising, marketing, and branded content campaigns. In addition, he has produced and directed for television, recently completing 2 seasons as producer/director on TLC's hit reality show My 600 Pound Life.

Tell us about yourself

I started exploring my photography and videography journey at the same time as when I was in high school. I had a passion for skateboarding, music, and the arts but wasn't adept enough to consider a career path in any of those mediums. By picking up a camera, I was able to be a part of as well as contribute to various cultures I love and identify with. It was the closest way for me to be on stage without having to play an instrument, work with chefs I admire, my appreciation of the female form, tell stories of people or brands, and use my skills to initiate positive, social change.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is a cliché because it's true: I've never worked a day in my profession. Any day, job, or client I get to work with is a privilege I do not take lightly. Like a lot of peers and people I know, they are stuck in jobs they hate, careers that are limited and unfulfilling. I'm grateful enough to be able to find joy and blessing in ALL projects I'm lucky enough to be considered for. The fact that I get to make a living, thrive creatively, and engage with so many people in a vast array of lives, I'm a student of the world.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding the gumption to get up again after being defeated. Not taking your personal, artistic offering too personally. Self-starting a new project, endeavor, or service when you feel like no one cares or that you have nothing to contribute that is unique. Looking for the lessons in failure and not dooming yourself to repeat those mistakes in the future.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's good to look at your competition and competitors so you can work smarter, not hard but do not compare yourself to them...That's a losing battle only you are fighting.
  2. Know your skills, talents, and limits, but it is essential to step outside of your comfort zone to grow as a person, business, or professional...Don't be afraid to say yes because you don't have the answer at that moment.
  3. Know the power of "no." Know your value and self-worth, and set healthy boundaries with yourself and what you are willing to do.
