What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a barbershop called MGX Barbers. We provide men and boys with trending haircuts.

Tell us about yourself

I got started in my business organically. My father was a big DIY type and didn't like to visit the barbershop, so he used to cut my hair as a kid. When I reached high school, I wanted more frequent haircuts, so I'd take his clippers and cut my own hair on a weekly basis. I eventually got better and started cutting friends. My clientele and skills grew from there.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is to be able to say that I led a team of barbers to hit their income goals by working together to do what's best for the client, which in turn led us to establish a great reputation online and within the community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is pushing through the unexpected and having to learn to wear multiple hats in the beginning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I'd say don't start the business for the money. Do it because you're excellent at providing a particular service or product. Put your customers first and go above and beyond in your customer service. Finally, zone in on what brings the client through the door, make a call, or visit your website... Often, people try to attract clients through many marketing channels and achieve watered-down results. Just focus on one channel at a time, then move to the next. For instance... Work on your local SEO strategy by optimizing your google business profile. That alone is a lot of work but well worth the results.
