Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Wight, owner of Michelle Wight Makeup Artistry, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

In my business, I work closely with an in-house team of skilled hair and makeup artists based in Seattle. Serving local and destination weddings, commercial shoots, and editorial work, my team has years of experience to ensure that your vision comes perfectly to life. In addition, everyone on my team stocks their makeup kits with a diverse range of shares and formulas to suit an array of skin tones and has experience styling a variety of hair types and textures. Sit back, relax, and let our team of stylists do the work!

Tell us about yourself

I'm a professional hair and makeup artist based in Seattle. A mom of four, a wife, and a beauty fanatic who loves to bring dynamic experiences to life. As a born collaborator, I help clients create an authentic look for life's cherished moments, embracing the uniqueness of their individual beauty and identity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My work has been featured by various industry outlets, including Seattle Bride, Style Me Pretty, and The Knot. I have also been voted "Best of The Knot" in the bridal hair and makeup category four years in a row! We have been featured on Evening with King 5 for our Hispanic Heritage Month Project.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As the team grows and we are able to celebrate with more clients every year, my role changes. I started as a makeup artist, and I've had to learn how to do my own marketing, branding, run a team, schedule, plus raise four kids at home.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it, don't wait for the perfect time...it will never come.
  2. Be a learn it all, find a mentor in your industry that you look up to, learn from them, build a community of support...you'll need it.
  3. Show up on social media, website, or marketing materials. Having a business is great, but customers want to know who owns the business, why, who you are, and why they want to work with you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I knew at 18 years old that I wanted to be a makeup artist, but I had so much self-doubt because I listened to other people's opinions instead of my own. I wouldn't make that mistake again, and I encourage anyone who is passionate, is ready to work hard, to follow their goals and dreams, and just do it!
