Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamila Muhammad, Founder of Mila's Front Porch, located in Oviedo, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mila's Front Porch is a specialty bakery that specializes in keto, gluten-free, plant-based/vegan, and healthy, delicious traditional desserts. My customers are health conscious, have special diets, or just love dessert!

Tell us about yourself

I am a single mom of three girls. My daughters are now 13,15 and 17. I went back to school in 2011 at Valencia College for Baking and Pastry Management. Shortly after enrolling in school, I decided to apply to work at Disney and started working at Disney as a Pastry Cook 1 (Park Event Operations). Working in that kitchen, I learned so much that I use to this day. Since then, I have worked at the University of Central Florida, a gluten-free bakery, a tea room, an assistant bakery manager, a bakery manager, and a dining room supervisor at an assisted living facility, all while baking on the side as Three Girls Bakery. In January 2020, I decided to take the leap and get a commercial kitchen and work full time. I became Mila's Front porch in June 2020. I opened my 1st retail location in May 2021 in The Oviedo Mall. I'm motivated every day by the idea of providing a legacy for my daughters. I also love to see happy guests/customers who can get their favorite dessert, even if they have an allergy or special diet.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is acquiring a retail location. It's been a very long sought-after dream for me. I'd have to say after that, being chosen to provide 1500 cupcakes for the Walmart distribution center anniversary in Davenport, FL.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is balancing my self-care, my family, and my business needs. As a solopreneur, I wear all hats. It's been important for me to understand that self-care makes me a better business owner and mom.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn your craft, and do it every day as much as possible to the point people look at you as zealous. Always keep learning!
  2. Self-care needs to be scheduled into your day. Make sure you rest, drink water and be healthy. You can only pour from a full cup!
  3. Remember to celebrate little wins and reward yourself!
