Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandy Slack, owner of Mittens Motel LLC., located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We're an all-cat boarding facility, and we service clients who are going out of town with cats they don't want to leave home alone or may need medication.

Tell us about yourself

I always knew I wanted to work with animals since I was young. I started my animal career working in a pet store for 5yrs, then working in the veterinary field for 20yrs, before I opened Mittens Motel in 2010. I absolutely love cats and their different personalities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I never went to college. I did a lot of research and talked to another cat boarding facility before I decided to do this type of business. I learned everything I needed to know about common cat diseases while working in the veterinary field.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Paying bills/rent when we're in our slow season or during the pandemic. Having to work every day or holiday if you don't have employees. Having to clean the facility on a daily basis or dealing with a dying cat while trying to honor a client's wishes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Research the demographical area you want to have your business. How much will it cost to startup? Is there a need for your type of business?

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Do what makes you happy! I also like to help students with learning job skills. I currently have helped Parkrose HS, David Douglas HS, Albertina Kerr, and DHS.
