Tastes and Flavors From Around the World - Mola Foods

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with LaFortune Djabea, Founder of Mola Foods, Inc., located in Nashua, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I manufacture a "culture in a bottle" spice blends, marinades, hot sauce, natural drinks like Hibiscus juice, and snacks. My customers are adventurous eaters looking to try food from other countries.

Tell us about yourself

I started Mola Foods because a friend wanted me to create products using my grandmother's recipes and also because I was looking for spices that reminded me of Cameroon. I started Mola Foods to solve the lack I was experiencing. Additionally, I wanted to help adventurous eaters experience diverse cuisine without changing how they cook food. My children are my motivation; they are why I wake up and do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far is being able to live my dream of owning a business I call mine.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me as a business owner is staying the course amid adversity.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small but start.
  2. Learn to become resilient because you are going to need it.
  3. Keep the course no matter what. Running a business isn't going to be easy, but it will be rewarding in the end.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I can say this: starting a business is not for the faint of heart. It's difficult and exhausting, and it will steal your joy at times. However, once you finally reach your life goal, all the bad experiences will become bittersweet. It's okay to feel like you don't know what you are doing; it is part of the process, and soon, you will be the expert. Take your time.
