What's your business, and who are your customers?

Monachopsis Consulting is an equity, diversity, and inclusion consultancy that offers workshop facilitation, training, consulting services, and program design to drive forward meaningful change in organizations.

With intersectional frameworks and an understanding of HR practices, Monachopsis Consulting works with leaders, HR, and change agents in various organizations across several industries, most notably in the tech, consulting, and non-profit sectors.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for this space stems from my experiences at the various intersections of my identity and my experiences working within the human resources space. I've been in areas where inclusion isn't at the forefront for organizations and have seen the difference that can be made when it is.

As a black and queer individual who has spent their entire career in the corporate space, I want to create more safe and inclusive workplaces that enable people of all identities to be successful. It used to be a minor part of my work, but my passion for this field drove me to ensure it is at the core of all the work I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Even though I'd been doing this type of work on the side for a while before launching, it was a considerable risk to decide to bet on myself and find the business officially. That accomplishment alone is something that I'm incredibly proud of myself for doing because it gave me a greater sense of purpose and allowed me to create my vision and have freedom over the work I want to be doing that I'm most passionate about.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the biggest challenges of being a business owner is finding new opportunities to spread the word about your business and get your name and brand out there.

You need to be resilient because you can have high periods of many calls and opportunities and low periods where not a lot is happening. There is often a lag between making a new connection and starting a new project, so you constantly need to put yourself out there to find work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Grow and cultivate your network because it's your biggest asset in finding new opportunities.
  2. Find community, mentorship, and support with people working in the same space as you and can relate to what you are going through as an entrepreneur in your field.
  3. There is no one right way to start a business, and after researching and planning the things you need to do sometimes, you need to pick a place to start and start. Things will begin to come together as you go on.
