Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennet McFadgen, co-owner of Moo Free Beverages, located in Oakville, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a vegan grocer that delivers directly to our customer's houses! Our focus is on delivering local, sustainable, and healthy products. We also make our own vegan milk which are the healthiest option out there (no preservatives, additives, you know all ingredients on our ingredient list)! They are also packaged in returnable glass products, like much of our products we have! Our customers come to our website because they are looking for plant-based products that are healthy, sustainable, and taste delicious!

Tell us about yourself

We are a father-daughter business, and we decided to start Moo Free Beverages once I finished university. I am lactose intolerant and started making my own milk at university! We started the business by making our plant-based milks and going to farmer's markets. Some Saturdays, we would be at 12 markets! Quickly we grew from there! We are now 100% online or in a few select grocery stores.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is going from farmer's market to online! That was a big transition, and I am really proud of that!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Work work work. There is so much time that goes into being a business owner! Sometimes it's hard to balance business and personal time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask other businesses owners lots of questions!
  2. Take your time with the decisions you make.
  3. Always think of the long term, not the short term.
