Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home sustainability but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Juliet Jones, Founder of More Sustainable Consulting LLC., located in Montclair, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an in-home sustainability consultant who helps busy families live more sustainably. Living more sustainably is something we all know we should be doing, but it can feel overwhelming with all the different choices out there. I'm here to help families define what living sustainably means to them so they can align with their personal values, whether that's eating locally, reducing waste, consuming less, or reducing energy use. The 6-week program includes a personalized action plan with specific steps based on each family's lifestyle and values.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been passionate about sustainability for my own home, and for nearly 20 years, I worked for a sustainably mission-driven engineering firm. The pandemic completely changed our lives - I stopped working and was home for a year with my two children. During that time, I became even more aware of how we reflect our values at home, in the food we eat and the clothes we wear, and also how important community is. I wanted to be able to connect others to the vibrant sustainability community we have in North Jersey.

I'm always excited to find new businesses that have the same values as mine and then to connect other families to them in a way that makes their life closer to the ones they imagine. I love coming up with new ideas to break down barriers and make life easier for people to live more sustainably.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just deciding to take the plunge and start my own business was a big step for me. I had sat with the idea for a couple of years before moving forward, and I am so glad that I did.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a new business owner moving from being a cog in a large global company to the sole owner of a business, the hardest thing has been to 'put me out there.' However, I think it's really important that clients know who I am and what my values are so that we are a good fit and they are excited to work with me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a community of other business owners with whom you can share ideas, challenges, and failures!
  2. Don't strive for perfection. You will never move forward if you spend too much time letting perfect be the enemy of good.
  3. Tell EVERYONE what you are doing. You never know what connections might spark or what new paths will open up.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you are excited about something, it is probably the right thing to move forward with. Be prepared to listen to feedback and tweak things, but always listen to your gut first.
