Physical Therapy and Performance - Move Athletics

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roger St. Onge, Founder of MOVE Athletics, located in West Springfield, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Move Athletics is an out-of-network Performance Therapy clinic blending highly skilled Physical Therapy with a muscular Strength and Conditioning background helping athletes and active adults stay active and pain-free... even when they've tried everything.

Move Athletics works with active adults and athletes of all ages. We work with CrossFitters, weightlifters, runners, cyclists, and High-Intensity exercisers.

Tell us about yourself

Many of my athletes would have muscular aches and pains in the CrossFit gym. So they would go out to physical therapists, medical doctors, chiropractors, surgeons, etc... And they would be told things like "that's bad for you, just stop "and "Use less weight and do more reps" or "Deadlifting is bad for your back," "Running is bad for your knees."

I knew that there was a better way. I became self-educated and found myself helping people more than professionals (at the time, I was a CrossFit coach with no medical background). So I decided to go to physical therapy school to help the athletes and active community get the help they deserve to stay involved in the activities that bring their life joy without pain.

Changing lives is what motivates me every day. I get to work with people who were failed by the medical system and finally give them the help they deserve… many times when they were told they have to live with pain and stop the activities they love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a team of outstanding individuals who are just as passionate about helping the fitness community as I am—also being awarded Western Mass Business West 40 under forty.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The discomfort of the self-growth you must go through to become the person you need to succeed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a mentor.
  2. Start now. Figure it out later.
  3. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. You will know the answers after you've taken action.
