Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in prenatal and postpartum but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Jorgensen, Birth Educator & Infant Sleep Specialist of My Birth Network, located in Harrison Township, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a certified childbirth educator, infant sleep specialist, and perinatal nutritionist, my passion is helping current, and future parents feel empowered to make evidence-based decisions that aid them in taking an active role when welcoming their children into this world through my consulting and coaching courses. I fully believe that parents need to look at the benefits, risks, costs, and inconveniences as well as their own values, goals, and preferences when making any decision throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

Tell us about yourself

I married my husband in 2016, and we had our daughter Harsen in 2018. She is my "why." Through my own birth and postpartum journey, my calling is to help change the way we approach birth as a whole and help others by building their own confidence through education and support. My point of view is that YOU are your biggest cheerleader, and YOU know what is right for you and your family. I love being the one to help guide you with fact-based information toward the direction and decisions you choose. This is a no-judgment zone, as there is no 'wrong' and 'right,' just ways you've tried and those you haven't yet. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I struggled to find support and SCIENCE based information at the beginning of my pregnancy journey. There were so many decisions I needed to make for myself and my newborn; it was overwhelming. Articles I found online often contradicted each other, and it left me thinking that whatever I chose, I was doing it 'wrong' instead, leading me to think I was doing what was right for my family. I needed support to know that I knew my own body best and that the choices I was making were, in fact, 'right' and customized to me. Once I was able to do enough science-based research, I was able to block out all of the other opinions and pave my own path to welcome and raise my new baby. My birth journey ultimately led me to want to help other expecting parents and fill the gap of support that is missing in our society today. I absolutely LOVE the water (Aquarius here!), so you will find me near the closest ocean, lake, or pond that I can find. I also enjoy interior design and have a passion for finding bargain deals!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is my small everyday wins. For example, when I have been working with a family for a few weeks, they text me excitedly and relieved and tell me that their baby is sleeping better and thank me for my education training. Another huge win for me is when a new mom writes me and tells me she felt empowered and educated in the birth of her baby, even though the birth may not have turned out the way she wanted it to. On the business aspect of things, being able to launch my own courses with the knowledge I have gained in hopes of helping just a few parents means the world to me!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is that you are the sole driver of your business. There is no one else that is going to maintain the website, post on social media, or try and get the word out there that you are here to help! It can be such a large and daunting task, and it never gets any easier; you just get better at it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research your business or other businesses in your field, and see what you love about them and what you would change on your own.
  2. Don't judge your day 1 on someone else's day 1001; if you work at it, it will come.
  3. Build relationships and connections, and always offer to help others first.
