Legitimize and Grow - Mylance

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bradley Jacobs, Founder and CEO of Mylance, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mylance has products that help professionals launch and grow successful consulting businesses, including a turn-key website, a 60-day live crash course Accelerator, and bookkeeping/tax services. Our goal is to help every professional earn $10k per month in part-time income, whether on the side of a full-time job or they consult "full-time."

Tell us about yourself

I worked at Uber in Operations and Launch for 4.5 years, from 2014 to 2018. It was a great experience, but after a while, I felt burnt out, undervalued, and like I'd reached my ceiling. So I quit. I wanted to explore starting a company and needed to pay the bills in the meantime. So I sought out part-time consulting work. And my life changed forever. I found my first client from my LinkedIn messages and quickly built up my independent consulting business up to $25k / month, working only 25 hours per week. I became incredibly passionate about this way of working. It was so powerful!

So I founded Mylance so that everyone can work for themselves part-time, make great money, and add value to incredible companies. To me, one single source of income is scary and powerless. Monetizing your knowledge and experience through consulting gives you the power back of your earning potential and time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To me, it's all about the customers we've helped. When we help someone quit their job and make $20k / month on the side, it's incredible. It changes their lives forever. And we built this company to help them do that. There's no greater feeling.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Everything falls back on you. When there's an issue, it's on your shoulders. Your team needs support, customers need to be served, and then there are a ton of internal problems to solve, like legal, accounting, finance, cash flow, etc. It really never ends and if you don't constantly like to context switch, owning a business isn't for you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just get started. Put something out there. Get feedback. Collect emails. Find a way to get someone to pay for something. Just do it. Spending the time and energy to strategize, get a logo made, and build an entire business plan ends up being a complete waste of time. Put one foot in front of the other and get started.
  2. Invest in yourself. Find a coach. Join an Accelerator program. Find a community. Buy a course. Get a co-working space. Whatever works for you that's going to help you up-level yourself. I've never made an investment in myself that didn't pay off.
  3. Keep an even pace. You can't build a whole company in a day, week, or month. No one decision is going to make or break it either. Make tangible progress every single day, and you'll make huge strides over the course of 6-12 months. It takes a lot of grit and determination to do it successfully, but if you keep a sustainable pace, it's much easier.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There's no "right" way to do anything. People will tell you that you HAVE to do something. But you don't. You don't need a product to sell something. You don't need a headshot for a website. You don't even need a logo. Thinking for yourself and doing what feels genuinely right for you is likely your best bet.
