Your Go-to Virtual Personal Stylist - Nicole Otchy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Otchy, founder of Nicole Otchy, Personal Styling, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a personal stylist for ambitious women who want to use their style to build magnetic personal brands. I show my clients how to use their wardrobe as a tool in their life and work to show up as the most empowered version of themselves.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business 12 years ago after having two jobs that allowed me access to highly driven, public-facing men and women in both finance and academia. What I observed in those spaces was that when women had to present their knowledge and expertise, their appearance and negative feelings about their bodies became more pronounced and weakened their confidence more than men. These professional experiences shaped my mission to help women use their personal style as a way to be at peace with themselves and their bodies so they can tune out this unhelpful noise and show up as the experts they are, and make a bigger impact.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that highly intelligent; successful women trust me to work with them to reimagine their image. I've worked with big brands as a consultant, and some would argue that's more prestigious, but those experiences haven't been near as fulfilling as working one-on-one with my clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest aspect of being a business owner is uncertainty and how much of the work of entrepreneurship is about mindset management.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Spend money to get where you want to go faster in your business by hiring a mentor or coach.
  2. Learn how to work smarter instead of harder at content creation to market your business because it can feel like a full-time job all on its own when running a business.
  3. Surround yourself with people who encourage you and lift you up. Running a business comes with hard days and challenges that can feel deeply personal.
