Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Zadunayski, Owner of Nicole Zee Photography, located in Spruce Grove, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a maternity, newborn, and family photographer based in Edmonton, Alberta.

Tell us about yourself

I have loved photography from a young age. When I was little, I would bring a disposable camera on vacation and always looked for something fun to take photos of. But when I had my first child, I wanted to capture every moment. Each month I would do little mini-shoots with him. And by the time I had my third child, I knew this was something I wanted to do for other families. I saw how fast children grow, and I wanted to capture all of the details and connections to hold on to and help us remember when they were so little. I also saw how difficult and daunting family photos can be, so my goal is to make it as easy as possible by providing a client closet and guidance to take some stress away.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment is achieving my dreams. When I decided to become a photographer, I never thought about everything that went along with owning a business. And having to figure it all out and succeed is very rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things I had to learn was all of the business sides of things. How to build a website, how to build contracts and questionnaires, and all of the other paperwork behind being a photographer. I am always still learning and growing, but I had come a long way from where I was when I first started.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, I would say just go for it! You will never start if you keep your dream just a dream. Dig in.

Second, have patience. It took me 3 years of learning and growing to get where I am, and I still have a long way to go to achieve my big goals. Strive to accomplish all the little goals, and eventually, you will achieve your ultimate goal.

Third, invest in education. I would not have been able to get over the humps without my mentors. I've invested in photography and business education which have helped me tremendously.
