Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Catie Harris, CEO of NursePreneurs, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

NursePreneurs helps nurses to start businesses in the area of IV Hydration, Med Spas, Concierge Nurse Services, Chronic Care Management, Staffing agencies, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I was burnt out in nursing and tired of not getting anywhere. I love to learn and grow. I am a visionary at heart and love new ideas. This did not fit well where I worked, where change was not appreciated, and my opportunities were limited due to the fact that I was a nurse. I was passed over several times because a nurse in a power of position over physicians would not be tolerated. I'm motivated each day to help nurses find their passion and share their expertise in a way that they were not encouraged to do so otherwise.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching over 100 IV Hydration businesses. We have given nurses the tools and resources they need to be successful. Since I've read there are less than 700 IV Hydration businesses out there; I am proud that we have helped put a dent in this industry and will continue to help mold it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Knowing when the day is over. It's never over, so you have to decide when you are not going to check email, slack or social media. I need downtime, and the business doesn't always allow for that. I have lots of ideas that I want to push forward, but I am limited by time and resources. Plus, my team gets a little crazy when I have a few more ideas to share. I have to learn to keep all my ideas to a minimum so as not to confuse people or seem like I'm jumping from idea to idea.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a problem first. It's easy to see people running successful businesses and want to copy what they are doing, but the best businesses are solving a fundamental problem first and foremost. Chase after that problem with your solution.
  2. Network with as many people as you can. Focus on building relationships instead of asking people to help you or promote you. Figure out what you can do for someone else first.
  3. Believe in what you are doing. If you truly believe in what you are offering, you will find ways to overcome all the obstacles that will be thrown at you - and there will be a lot of them!
