What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a mobile community-based pediatric occupational therapist and owner of Alaska Children's Therapy, specializing in feeding therapy, fine and gross motor delays, along with sensory processing concerns in children from birth to 7 years of age. ⁠

Tell us about yourself

I've always wanted to have a pediatric OT therapy practice. Although there is never a perfect time to start a business, I felt inspired to go after this dream after getting laid off from my OT position on maternity leave. I had 90 days to get the ball rolling, and that's exactly what I did!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing my business from the ground up! My caseload is almost full, and I feel so grateful for the many families and children I get to serve. I leave work feeling excited and so excited to see all the progress each child has made.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard to turn work mode off; there's always more to get done. I've been learning how to create and set boundaries for work time versus family time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take it one day at a time.
  2. Break complex tasks down into simple steps.
  3. You don't have to do it ALL; it's okay to ask for help.
