Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Pam Anderson, owner of Pamsweets, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Pamsweets is a small, family-run baking business that specializes in a variety of sweets for holidays and special occasions. We cater to individual customers, real estate agents, and other professionals in our local community as well as Toronto and neighboring areas.

Tell us about yourself

I started Pamsweets several years ago when I was asked to bake for a local craft fair which was raising money for my daughter's sports team. As a result, my love of baking cookies and sweets has grown into a year-round business. I find baking relaxing, and I enjoy interacting with my customers, paying attention to the details of their custom orders, so they get exactly what they want for their special occasion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Each year, I get orders from several returning customers and many new ones, especially at Christmastime. It is a very good feeling to have loyal customers who support you and enjoy your creations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It is time management, of balancing the time to shop for ingredients, prepare and bake my products, advertise on social media and keep track of expenses and invoices.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Enjoy what you do. You will put in long hours to grow and develop your business.
  2. Be conscientious of what your customer is looking for. Pay attention to the special details that your customer is looking for and set your product apart from other businesses.
  3. Be flexible with your customers. Always put their needs first.
