Animation. Design. Illustration - Periscope Studios

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in animation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jo Perry, Founder, and Co-Director of Periscope Studios Ltd, located in Oldham, Lancashire, England.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We create award-winning 2D & 3D animations, designs, and illustrations. Over the years, we've worked on projects for BBC, Hewlett Packard, Dell Computers, Cancer Research, CRC-Evans, Incuna, Oldham & Rotherham Councils, and Eureka! Children's Museum and many others, which you can find on our website.

Tell us about yourself

My husband and I work together. Working for ourselves gives us greater freedom and scope. It's true what they say - find something you love to do, and you'll never work a day in your life, and when you're your own boss, it's the cherry on top. Having a mortgage and two children also motivates us, of course. LOL.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I wouldn't say there was one accomplishment that's greater than any other; I think a collection of small accomplishments achieves the same effect. For instance, having stayed in business for 13 years, surviving COVID lockdowns when other businesses folded, our work winning awards, and receiving a growing number of great customer reviews online are all accomplishments to be proud of. I guess you could say working with my husband every day and us not ripping each other's heads off is also a great achievement.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I'm a bit of an introvert, so I struggle with networking, but these days I think it's just as effective to network online, which I'm more comfortable with.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Each time you complete a project, ask that the customer leave a review for you online.
  2. Working for yourself can be unpredictable, so try (if you can) to leave some money in the bank for a rainy day.
  3. Don't just post projects to your website; post them to social media too.
