Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Preston Hennes, Owner of PH Photo Co, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

PH Photo Co is a photography and videography company with a diverse portfolio specializing in events. This includes a range of occasions but focuses particularly on concert and music photography, portrait sessions, and private events, to name a few. My clients are equally broad, from individuals wanting to capture their important moments all the way to supporting work for brand identities, but the goal is always the same, telling their story in a unique and engaging way.

Tell us about yourself

Originally I went to college to study architecture graduating in 2014, and while I did practice for a number of years, I felt increasingly drawn to photography. Once I decided to pursue it more seriously, I made a commitment to bringing my vision and unique experience into everything I create. The thing that most motivates me to continue is remembering how much I’ve already improved since I started. It makes me keep wanting to invest time and effort into becoming the best artist I can be.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Definitely continuing to grow, especially over the past few years. This has allowed me to pursue more opportunities and cultivate relationships within the industry. When you are a business owner and can find ways to expand, particularly in a saturated market, it’s always an encouraging sign that you’re bringing value to your clients and acutely understanding their needs.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management, organizing all the priorities, and finding ways to get everything delivered on time. As a business owner, everything comes down to you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

While there are going to be a number of skills and learning that happens along the way, I would say that my top 3 would be the following:

  1. Just talk to people. You never know where your next job is going to come from.
  2. You don’t have to know everything to get started. The important thing is to get started.
  3. You don’t have to take every job. Figure out what your niche is earlier and how to bring value to your clients and then capitalize!
