Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gustavo Tolosa, Co-Founder of Plantemus, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is to help people get started on a Whole Food, Plant-Based diet with easy and delicious meal ideas (no complicated recipes). My customers are beginners who need to know exactly what to do and how to do it as well as more advanced WFPB followers. Sometimes people fall off the wagon and need help to Detox and Re-Set their system to get back on. I help them with that.

Tell us about yourself

Ten years ago, I was obese and felt like I was dying. I watched a movie (Forks Over Knives) that opened my eyes to the WFPB way of eating, and I started with a 10-Day Live-In Program in California, where I learned the best what to do and how to do it. I want to live a long and productive life, but mostly I want my quality of life to be the best possible, regardless of how many years I live. I don't want to end up with horrible diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc., and I want to enjoy my family and friends and help those who need and want help to recover their health using food as medicine.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is to help others regardless of money. I do charge for some of my programs, but most of what I do is free. And even those programs that have a fee, I always offer financial help for those who are struggling. I have created a YouTube channel (under my name Gustavo Tolosa) and a Facebook page (under "doctorstarch") that have thousands of followers, and that makes me happy to know that I am reaching so many people who want help.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Understanding where each person is and starting at that point, not applying a one-size-fits-all method. Spending time getting to know each person and taking them by the hand so that they can accomplish the change and goals they wish to accomplish.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn as much as possible in your field and keep studying and learning.
  2. Create a good internet presence and always be clear and upfront as to what you can offer.
  3. Focus on each person's goals and needs and treat them as real people.
