Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Aileen Selkirk, owner of Posh Boutique, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

An independent women's wear clothing boutique on the main street in a neighbourhood called The Beaches in Toronto, Canada. We sell quality clothing and jewellery, and accessories. Made in Canada and Europe. With a strong focus on sustainability and ethics as possible. To women ages 35+, no ageism.

Tell us about yourself

I loved clothing as a way of creative expression. Beautiful textiles became a passion. I worked in a small T-shirt silk screen business and learned about fabrics and prints. I opened my store selling my own clothing and everything on consignment. What motivates me every day is helping women feel good about themselves and being part of a strong community. I also feel a deep responsibility for creating employment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been operating and running my business for over 40 years, and having that longevity has given me a wonderful life with many customers that became friends. My other passion is traveling and owning my business. I was able to orchestrate my life my way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping up with tech is a challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Research every aspect of the business. Ask for help from others more qualified than yourself when you're not sure. Trust your gut instinct first.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running your own business is a full-time lifestyle choice. So you better be 100% sure you are committed. my motto has always been "Changes are new beginnings."
