What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a smoke shop that handles everyday cigarettes and vapes to cigars worldwide. The tobacco is half of the business; the other half is the products used by those who choose a different herbal product to consume.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in business for myself spanning 12 plus years. First was a safety training business turned over to my son effective January 2022. Several years later, a construction equipment rental business was developed, which is still operational today. Approximately 18 months ago, I started thing about the Poutine Fattened Beaver. I was not completely sure of the direction, but I believed there was an opportunity with the name. The logo was designed, trademarked, and copy for Canada and the United States was registered. The name has many business possibilities that just would be the right fit. The logo does display we are Canadian. I decided to play with the Canadian idea and wanted a business that would be off the wall and works on building a brand and not look like everyone else. I have never worked in this current retail business model, and the learning curve is steep and satisfying.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The greatest accomplishment is the thank you received at the end of the day for the services or supplied product to an individual.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying positive, believing in yourself, and staying the course.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop a business plan and work on the plan.
  2. Never stop learning about the product or service you are providing.
  3. Always make time to stop and smell the roses.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I was entering a business that appeared om dam near every street corner, and the one thing I found was the complete lack of support of Canadian-designed and manufactured glass wear. 80% of the glass product displayed is designed and made in Canada.
