Change the Face of Leadership - PPCaDI

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kiki Ramsey, Founder of The Positive Psychology Coaching and Diversity Institute, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

PPCaDI is a Leadership and Diversity Coaching Company focused on creating belonging for all Leaders. We specialize in leadership and diversity coaching. Our mission is to help people from all backgrounds find greater purpose, courage, and belonging. Our vision is to change the face of leadership.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Positive Psychologist and Executive Coach; therefore, it's my job to look at things from a positive aspect and ask powerful questions. In the wake of the George Floyd murder, one resounding theme kept floating around in my mind: there must be a better way. There must be a better way for us to get along, communicate, relate, and realize that we are more alike than different. At that moment, I knew I had to do more. So I founded PPCaDI with the hope that through coaching, we could teach leaders in organizations how to build better relationships and communicate around tough topics like leadership and diversity, equity, and inclusion. I do this every day so that we all can wake up, go to work, and feel a sense of psychological safety at a place where we spend more than 50 percent of our time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been able to assemble a world-class, diverse coaching roaster to help me in this great work. These leadership and diversity coaches are some of the best on the field. I also completed my Ph.D. in Business Psychology with a study in Positive Psychology, and I hold a Master Certified Coach (MCC) designation from the International Coaching Federation, all in an effort of doing this great work. Last but not least, PPCaDI has been able to work with some dynamic organizations helping leadership shift the way they operate and think about leadership and DEI.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is access to capital to remain in business. PPCaDI is a startup, and we have not received any funding yet; we have kept our doors open, and we remain scrappy because we know our work is not only changing the lives of the leader we coach, but we are making the world a better place.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't start a business you are not wildly passionate about because you won't be able to withstand the hard times when they hit. It will be your passion that carries you through when things get tough.
  2. Focus the majority of your efforts on business development and marketing. These two main things will keep you in business for the long haul.
  3. Focus more on your strengths and not your weaknesses. You can always hire for your weaknesses, but your strengths will help your company soar.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I love helping people realize their strengths and understand there were placed on this earth for a beautiful purpose. We all must live in the same world. We might as well understand how to thrive together. That's what I want for us all.
